Solidarity Edition

A new Limited Edition marks a symbolic moment of resistance to the destruction of ocean life. This first collaboration with the international direct-action marine conservation movement, Sea Shepherd, uses repurposed materials and historical records to highlight the ongoing struggle to save the oceans.
On 20 November 1820, a sperm whale bull rammed and sank the American whaler, Essex. Her fateful final voyage made global news at the time, before inspiring Herman Melville’s ‘Moby-Dick’. Two centuries later, Montegrappa joins forces with Sea Shepherd to recount her epic tale, and draw attention to humanity’s continued assault on ocean ecology.
Victory of the Whale relies on seasoned craftsmanship and authentic materials to tell a rare tale of resistance and natural justice. A cetacean-shaped pocket clip records the story’s unlikely hero: a symbol of respect and compassion for the environment.
The mighty whale that sent the Essex to the ocean floor is suspended above a raging sea of vintage bronze. Material from the propeller of the former Sea Shepherd flagship – M/Y Steve Irwin – has been used to cast these signature elements, providing a tactile link to years of front-line activism.
Handcrafted mahogany references the Essex’s carvel-plank hull beneath a sea of turquoise celluloid. A black band of resin is stamped with Sea Shepherd’s rejigged Jolly Roger flag to represent a symbolic last line of defence between whale and whaler.
The bicentenary of the attack is referenced by editions of 200 fountain pens and 200 rollerballs. Each example shows solidarity with a movement that refuses to tolerate lawless exploitation. Proceeds from the edition support Sea Shepherd’s mission to halt illegal fishing in the Mediterranean.
Sea Shepherd was founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson. Staffed by thousands of volunteer ‘shepherds’, the non-profit’s ‘Neptune’s Navy’ fleet patrols the oceans, enforcing marine conservation laws where others cannot – or will not.
With its ‘direct-action’ brand of activism, Sea Shepherd has established a reputation as true mavericks in the Montegrappa mould. Like the organisation it honours, Victory of the Whale is bold –because it must be.
DESCRIPTION
Mahogany, celluloid and repurposed bronze recount the tale of the Essex, an American whaler sunk in 1820. Her epic encounter inspired Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick, and lives on in the lore of Sea Shepherd. The international direct-action marine conservation movement contributed bronze from its former flagship to a design nostalgic in stature, but revolutionary in posture. Together for the ocean!
